Redmi is teasing the launch of a new device on March 17 in India. The company shared the development across its social media handles with the hashtag “XL Experience.” The caption and promotional poster clearly indicates that the Xiaomi sub-brand is planning to launch its first Smart TV in India. Currently, Xiaomi sells smart TVs in India under the Mi brand. The Redmi Smart TV was first teased during the Redmi Note 10 series launch event last week.
During the launch event last week, Xiaomi India Managing Director Manu Kumar Jain had stated that the company would unveil something “bigger” in the country after expanding its portfolio with power banks, audio accessories, and wearables. “We [Redmi] began our phone-plus strategy, and we launched many new product categories such as power banks, TWS, and the fitness band. And this year, in 2021, we are proud to introduce something bigger,” Jain noted.
Redmi introduced its first TV in China, the Redmi Smart TV 98-inch last year. The company, over the months, have introduced a variety of products at different price points. Recently, Xiaomi brought the Redmi Max 86-inch Ultra HD TV that was launched alongside the Redmi K40-series smartphones in China. Xiaomi and Redmi smart TVs compete directly against Vivo, Realme, and Oppo smart TVs in China – the three brands under the conglomerate BBK Electronics. In India, except for Vivo, both Oppo and Realme sell select TV models. All the brands also compete against global brands such as Vu, TCL, Samsung, Onida, and more.
The exact product details in the new social media post remain unclear, though the XL Experience indicates a smart TV with a big display. The Redmi Max 86-inch Ultra HD TV that was launched in China in February 2021 comes in a single black colour option and costs CNY 7,999 (approx Rs 91,0000). The LED-backlit LCD screen supports formats including HLG, HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision. It also has a 120Hz refresh rate and provides a total sound output of 25W. The smart TV runs MIUI for TV 3.0 software.
